The Underlying Message of a Cute Friendship

“Okja” was released on Netflix on June 28, and it might have been the most beautiful two hours of my life. This Korean-American movie caught my attention from the very beginning and sucked me into the plot line, ending with a heartwarming denouement.

The plot centers around a girl named Mija (Ahn Seo-Hyun) who goes to extremes in order to rescue her best friend, a supersized pig named Okja. The incorporation of a graphic pig as the main character makes the movie eye-catching and unique.

Despite the positive message Bong Joon-ho, the director, was trying to convey, “Okja” is an extremely graphic and violent movie. According to IMDB, “Okja” is rated TV-MA, which it should not be. Underneath Okja and Mija’s beautiful friendship, the movie has scenes of animals being disgustingly abused, not to mention the overused profanity.

“Okja” advocates animal liberation and displays the repulsive measures that humans take to make money. On the other hand, Mija’s never-ending love towards Okja illustrates the humane side of society, providing relief that the world isn’t composed of power-hungry companies such as Mirando Corporation.

Although “Okja” is a cute movie, the message Bong was trying to convey is nowhere near funny. The tears of Okja and Mija build emotion in viewers, allowing the audience to feel empathetic towards the abused pigs. The movie also fosters a hint of guilt to non-vegetarians, especially bacon-lovers.

All in all, “Okja” is brilliant; it’s a combination of good acting, an exciting plot, and a meaningful message. I want to applaud Bong and Jon Ronson, the other screenplay writer, for putting together an exceptional movie.
