초등 6학년 Humanities Project (사회 프로젝트)

6학년이 되면서 영무는 사회과목을 Social Studies 가 아닌 Humanities 라고 부르기 시작했다. 드디어 Ancient Civilization (고대 문명사)를 접하게 된 것이다.

그 첫번째 프로젝트인 '고대의 도구와 장신구'를 주제로 자신이 고대인이 되어 고대에 사용했던 도구나 장신구 중 하나를 스스로 만들어 무엇에 사용하며 언제,어디에서 사용했는지 고대인의 생활상을 리서치하고 발표하는 것이다.

학교에서 받아온 프로젝트에 대한 기획안 - 지금은 구하기 어려운, '자연에서 얻을 수 있는 재료들' 로만 도구를 만들어야 한다고 명시되어있다. 영무는 집 근처 나무가 많은 공원이나 골프장등을 돌며 뾰족한 돌과 새의 깃털등을 찾았다. 

고대 구석기와 중석기때 남자들이 사냥할 때 사용했던 활과 화살을 만들었다. 대나무, 노끈, 깃털, 가죽 만을 가지고 만들었다.
 대나무를 반으로 쪼개는 일이나 활의 양쪽 끝을 노끈으로 묶을 때는 아빠의 도움이 절실했다.

이젠 영무가 고대인이 되어 이 활과 화살을 어떻게 사용했는지 발표문을 썼다.

Hi, everyone! I’m Youngmoo.

Today, I’d like to tell you about my bow and arrow that I made.

The materials that I used to make this ancient tool are bamboo stakes, some string, a piece of rock, feather and leather. I bought the bamboo stakes and the string at Armstrong Garden Centers, found some pieces of rocks and feathers near Rancho San Joaquin Golf Course. Also, I got some leather from my dad’s storage.

 

Let me start with my bow first. My dad helped me split the bamboo stake in half and bend it in the shape of an arch. Then, I tied the string around the both ends of it and made a grip with leather. Next, I got a thinner bamboo stake for my arrow, made cuts in the middle of both ends. After that, I put a piece of rock on one end with a piece of string and stuck up a piece of feather into the other end.

 

Before I made this, I just thought it would be fun, however I realized that there were a couple of difficulties to make this ancient tool. One thing was that it was hard to bend the bamboo stake since it got broken easily. The other thing was that it wasn’t easy to find the right size or shape of rock for my arrowhead. While I was working on my bow and arrow, I could imagine how hard it would have been for Early Man to make just one tool. They might have spent too much time and energy on getting all the materials and making it. In fact, I felt relieved that I was lucky to be born in modern times.

 

In the late Paleolithic and the early Mesolithic Age, this must have been very important for people because it was their primary job to hunt animals to eat and live in the wild. For Early Man, the bow and arrow was a surely more efficient tool than a spear because people could hunt animals that were from a far distance.

 

I had a lot of fun making this tool and playing Early Man with my dad. More importantly, this project helped me understand and get more interests in Early Man’s life.

프로젝트 기획안에 나와 있는대로, 어느 시대에 어디서 누가 무엇을 할 때 이 도구를 썼는지 어떤 재료를 사용해서 만들었는지 장점과 단점은 무엇인지를 짜임새 있게 썼다.

창의성, 재료의 충실성, 논리적인 설명, 명확성 등 모두 만점을 받았는데, 목소리가 작아 1점이 깎였다. 역시 실전에 강해야 한다는 걸 다시 한 번 실감한다. 영무는 이틀에 걸쳐 활과 화살을 만들고는 고대인들이 먹고 살기 위해 이렇게 많은 시간과 에너지를 들여 도구를 만들어야 했다고 하니 현대 사회에 태어나 문명의 이기를 누리고 있는 자신이 너무 lucky 하다며 안도의 한숨을 쉰다. ^.^
