[얼바인의 이우연] 초 6 사회 (Humanities) 추가점수 과제 (Extra Credit)

6학년이 되고부터 영무의 사회과목 공부는 정규 과정 이론 만큼이나 Project 나 Extra Credit 의 비중이 커졌다. 현재 Humanities  과목에서 고대사를 배우는 중, 고대 최초의 문명사회였던 기원전 2300년경 메소포타미아 남부지역의 Sumerian 들의 삶을 반영하는 Ziggurat 모형 만들기가 그 대표적이다. 성경에 등장하는 바벨탑도 바로 메소포타미아 국가 중 하나인 바빌론의 Ziggurat 이라고 잘 알려져 있다.

Ziggurat (지구라트)은 고대 수메리안 사람들의 종교적, 정치적 삶의 중심이 되었던 가장 크고 중요한 건축물이다. 그들은 수많은 신들을 믿는 다신론자들이었다. 그 중 이 세상을 하늘, 바람, 산, 물의 네 주요 신들이 창조했다고 믿었고, 사회의 최고계급은 성직자들이었으며 Ziggurat 이란 신전을 세워 지금의 시청같은 역할을 담당하게 했다.

영무가 담임 선생님께 받아온 추가점수 과제 (Extra Credit)는 다음과 같다.

Ziggurat Extra Credit

Design your own Ziggurat. It should serve three purposes: as a gathering place for government, as a religious center, and as a place to observe the stars. Draw a picture of your Ziggurat on a 9×12 piece of construction paper (see me for paper or use your own). Use your creativity and "think outside of the box" to create your own design. Your drawing should include color and labeling. Next, write an 8-10 sentence paragraph explaining how th building fulfills all three purposes. You can earn up to 25 extra credit points towards your humanities grade.

그려오라고 했지만, 얼마전 피라미드를 만들어봤던 차에 영무는 만들어 보겠다고 했다.


재료: Cardboard 한 장, Wafers(웨하스) 4봉지, Peanut Butter, 붓, 풀

박스의 한 면을 자른 후, 웨하스로 1층~5층까지 풀로 붙여가며 쌓는다.

모형이 다 완성되면, 진흙을 표현하기 위해 윤곽 주위에 땅콩버터를 바른다.

주요 부분을 스티커로 붙여 표시해준다. 영무는 아래 계단(Stairs) 을 통해 올라가 3층에 일반 시민들이 세금을 내는 Tax Room, 5층에 사제들만 들어가는 Shrine, 맨 꼭대기의 전망대를 Observation Tower 라고 표기했다.

자신이 만든 Ziggurat 에 대한 영무의 설명

My Ziggurat serves as a gathering place for government, a religious center, and a place to observe the stars. The citizens go up the stairs until they meet the first entrance on the third level where the guards will be for checking if the people are their citizens. This is the gathering place where everybody in the city pays their taxes or has a meeting. Only the priests are allowed to go up to the top level where there is a shrine. It is considered as a holy room where they worship and pray to their gods. They would pray for their crops to grow well, for floods to come for watering their crops, and etc. Lastly, it serves as a place to observe the stars. Only the priests, or sometimes the prophets, would climb the stairs at the back of the shrine to observe the stars through the telescope on top of the ziggurat.
