[라이프롱잉글리쉬] 'The Lost Hero' 북리뷰

언제 들어도 흥미진진한 그리스와 로마의 신화를 기반에 둔 이야기 --- Percy Jackson 에 이어지는 Rick Riordan 의 새 기획 시리즈인 'The Lost Hero' 는 아이들 뿐만 아니라 어른들까지도 벌써 팬시장을 단단히 확고해놓은 분위기이다. 영무는 The Red Pyramid 이후로 고대 이집트 신들에 푹 빠져있다가 이 책이 나오면서 그리스와 로마신들에 관한 이야기로 관심을 돌렸다. The Lost Hero 마지막 책장을 덮으며 역시 Rick Riordan 이라며 팬으로서 만족한 웃음을 지었다.

주인공 Jason 은 제우스(Zeus)의 아들, 그의 친구 Leo는 대장장이 신 헤파이터스(Hephaestus)의 아들, Jason 의 여자친구 Piper 는 미의 여신 아프로디테(Aphrodite)의 딸.. 등 이 책의 주인공과 그의 친구들은 모두 Demigod(반신반인)으로 인간의 평범한 모습을 하고는 있지만 큰 출생의 비밀을 안고 있고 각자 비장의 무기- 즉, 신의 힘- 을 지니고 있어 위급한 상황에서 요긴하게 쓸 수 있다는 점 등이 아이들의 호기심을 자극하지 않았을까 싶다. 

게다가, 늘 그렇듯이.. Chapter 1 부터 궁금증을 불러 일으키는 Rick Riordan의 문체는 독자들을 한숨에 그의 이야기 세계 속으로 확 끌어들이는 힘이 있다.

그랜드 캐년으로 현장 학습을 가는 스쿨버스에서 잠이 깬 주인공 Jason 은 그 전의 일이 전혀 기억나지 않는 기억상실의 상황--에서 자기가 손을 잡고 있는 여자 친구인듯한 Piper와 그의 절친인듯한 Leo 와 함께 문제아들의 학교인 Wilderness School의 학생들이다. 그들의 스쿨버스는 느닷없이 폭풍 속에 휩싸여 주인공들은 어느덧 Camp Half-Blood 라는 곳에 떨어지게 되는데... 그 곳에서 만나게 되는 그리스와 로마의 신들, 그리고 그들과 엮인 운명 속에서 펼쳐지는 숨막힐 듯한 모험 이야기가 긴박감있게 흘러간다.

아이들의 관심을 집중시키는 Demigod 주인공들의 상징물이 재미있다.
제이슨의 동전, 파이퍼의 단검, 그리고 리오의 연장 벨트이다. Story 속에서 각 인물의 사연에 맞게 요긴하게 쓰여 책을 읽고 난 후, craft activity로 만들어봐도 좋을 듯 하다.

Jason's Coin:
Stamped on one side with the picture of a battle axe, with a man's face wreathed in laurels on the other, this piece of metal may come in handy for young demigod Jason.
What does it do?
This clever chunk of change has the power to turn into a weapon, with a simple toss in the air.
Noteworthy:
Sometimes this coin turns into a lance, sometimes it's a double-edged sword ... it all depends on the flip.

Piper's Dagger:
Proper name Katoptris, this weapon, sheathed in black leather, is the perfect tool for demigod Piper ... should she get caught in a scrap.
What does it do? 
Piper's chosen protective tool Katoptris is a ceremonial knife, useful in battle and is a symbol of power and status.
Noteworthy:
This knife was originally a wedding present to Helen of Troy, and when looked upon, can show much more than the holder's reflection.

Leo's Tool Belt:
On the surface, just an average tool belt, but the contents inside might just come in handy for demigod Leo.
What does it do?
When caught in battle or another sticky situation, Leo has the power to pull any average tool that comes to his mind, right out of his trusty tool belt. All he has to do is ask.
Noteworthy:
Leo's requests for his tool belt must be limited to small everyday objects, no magic items here.
